M249 SQUAD AUTOMATIC WEAPON
Conditions: Part I: You have been directed to conduct maintenance on your M249 machine gun. Part II: You have a stoppage while engaging targets.
Understanding This Task
The M249 SAW is the squad's automatic weapon, providing suppressive fire at the fire team level. This task has two parts: Part I tests your ability to disassemble and reassemble the weapon with a functions check, and Part II tests clearing, loading, firing, and immediate action.
Five-Point Safety Check: When clearing, you must inspect five areas — feed pawl assembly, feed tray, chamber, bolt face/chamber gap, and magazine well.
Key difference from M240: The M249 has a five-point safety check (includes magazine well), while the M240B has only four.
Common NO-GO Mistakes
- Forgetting the five-point safety check (especially magazine well)
- Not ensuring safety on FIRE before moving bolt/operating rod
- Right hand NOT palm up when pulling cocking handle
- Placing parts on wrong nomenclature labels during disassembly
- Not returning to standing position (timer stops when you stand)
- Exceeding 3-minute time standard for either part
Starting Configuration
Weapon: Free of ammunition, on FIRE, bolt forward. Bipod legs extended on flat surface.
Part I: Standing position with weapon on flat surface. Nomenclature group labels provided.
Part II: Prone position, not touching weapon. Blank ammo belt with dummy round in middle.
